Around the year 1400, the Hunze was dammed at Roodehaan and diverted to the city of Groningen in the newly dug Schuitendiep. The Schuitendiep flowed straight through the city along the (filled in) Boterdiep and the Rodeweg to the Hoogte where it rejoined the Hunze.
