The Zwanestraat is the youngest street in the city center. Ubbo Emmius mentions the street for the first time in the second edition of his Agro Frisiae. In his first edition, 26 major streets are mentioned in the City, in the second edition he writes:

In recent years, an entirely new twenty-seventh street has been added to the number of larger streets, adorned with ornate buildings; it starts at the northwest corner of the Grote Markt, cuts through the garden of the Franciscan monastery and runs to that part of the city that extends to the river.

The street was then referred to as New Street. [1]

The name of the street is derived from the house on the Grote Markt where the Zwanestraat now begins. The house, Die Witte Swane, was purchased by the city council in 1610 to enable the construction of the street.
