The imposing staircase leading down to the harbor, complete with a landing, was inaugurated in 1887 and used by dockworkers on their way to work.
Mercury and Neptune are depicted on the walls of the staircase, and the coats of arms of Prussia and Altona are displayed on the fountain.
From the staircase, one has a view of the timber harbor, the oldest harbor basin, which was constructed in 1722. Next to the staircase is the traditional harbor tavern, Schellfischposten.
