Maretsch Castle is located right on the edge of Bolzano's old town and on the banks of the Tafer. The complex was built in the 12th century. Today trade fairs, concerts and other events take place in the beautiful Maretsch Castle.

Very close to the historic old town of Bolzano and yet surrounded by greenery is Maretsch Castle.

Nestled in an extensive vineyard landscape and with a wonderful panorama of the rose garden, we find Maretsch Castle in the center of the city of Bolzano, more precisely at the water wall promenade. The building dates back to the 12th century. The oldest tower of the castle was built in 1194 by Berthold von Maretsch, according to written documents one of the representatives of the Counts of Tyrol and a judge in Bolzano at the time. At the beginning there was only the massive keep in the vineyards, which can still be seen today.

Between the 13th and 14th centuries, various owners further expanded the castle. The battlement and the dovetail battlements date from this period. In 1477, Sigmund Römer acquired the complex: The Römer family then began a conversion of the formerly medieval castle into a Renaissance palace complex, which spanned several decades. The four round outer towers were built during this time. Frescoes were also commissioned depicting philosophers of the time.

The complex was gently renovated in the 1980s, but is currently no longer inhabited. Today Maretsch Castle serves primarily as a trade fair, concert and event center, weddings are held here and in spring the traditional “Bozen wine tasting” takes place at Maretsch Castle. And how can you reach the castle? The beautiful building can be reached on foot from the city center or from Victory Square (parking lot) in just a few minutes.
