The Hahnentorburg is one of twelve originally castle gates in the eight-kilometer-long medieval city wall of Cologne (1180–1220) and ensured western access to the city on the road to Aachen and Jülich. It is located on today's Rudolfplatz.

The remaining historic city gates, here the "Hahnentorburg", which are now located in the middle of the city, are impressive witnesses to the extensive city wall that once protected Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium.
After their demolition, it is mainly thanks to the then mayor Konrad Adenauer that the vacated areas were not redeveloped, but instead the "green belt" that is still highly valued today was able to emerge.

This last double gate of the former city fortification was saved from being demolished under three other gates and is now used by the honor guard, who guides the prince, peasant and virgin in the carnival.
