The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Warsaw, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen, is located in front of the Staszic Palace. It depicts the astronomer holding a compass and an armillary sphere. Unveiled in 1830, it witnessed many historical events, including the sabotage action of Alexei Davidovsky during World War II. After the Warsaw Uprising, it was lost, but was found and restored to its place in 1945. In 2007, a model of the Solar System was added around the monument. Copies of the monument are located in Montreal and Chicago.
