The Warsaw Uprising Monument, located at Krasiński Square in Warsaw, was erected to mark the 40th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Its construction began after a fundraising campaign for money and materials, and the design was created as a result of a competition announced in 1984. The monument depicts figures of insurgents, some of whom enter the canal, while others escape from the destroyed structures. The monument was unveiled in 1989 by President Wojciech Jaruzelski. In 1994, it became the site of a historic speech by German President Roman Herzog, who was the first German to apologize to Poles for the crimes of World War II.
