This is a beautiful old Cistercian abbey that is also famous for its lavender cultivation. Most tourists come just for the lavender and hardly notice the abbey at all. It is well worth taking a tour of the old monastery rooms and attending a service in the abbey church. The singing of the monks in the wonderful acoustics is very touching!

The abbey is worth visiting; the cloister is worth seeing.

An absolute MUST is a guided tour of the abbey. From the outside it is an absolute highlight, but only inside you can really understand the unbelievable extent.
The tours take place in different languages and are designed to be quite interesting and appealing.
At first we didn't really want to take part, but a friend of mine said it was a must and it was more than worthwhile ... and she was absolutely right.

Probably one of the most photographed motifs of Provence - the purple lilac fields in front of the monastery of Senanque. Unfortunately, I was unlucky, because the lilac had already been harvested - a tour was then only possible in French.

There are many lavender fields around the abbey, which are in full bloom in June / July and enchant with their purple hues and bewitching scent.

Impressive building beautifully situated in lavender fields... it is THE motif in Provence. Of course, in September the lavender no longer blooms, the fields have been harvested, and at the moment the building is covered in scaffolding. The stone shines in a bright, clean yellow tone, there is no longer any sign of the weathered gray of the all too familiar photos.

Great hike in the gorge and Sènanque is really worth seeing.

The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1148 and is more than worth a visit. However, this is only possible with a guide; but it's worth it. In no case do without it!

There is a monastery shop with local products on the monastery grounds

the Abbey is overly restored, rather sanitized and only for French speaking people. Very large gift shop, if you get my meaning. No English information. The hike from Gordes is quite nice, but there is no loop so if you do it, you just have to hike back. Totally overrun with tourists. Even the renowned lavender field was filled with weeds, and we were told it's only planted to attract tourists as they need the money.
This hike, the rest of it to Village Bories from here and back to Gordes, is currently un-doable. I doubt anyone has done it in years. The stream has dried up, there is no falls, the trail is full of thorns and very overgrown, at parts quite steep and rocky and for us, it was dangerous. It was impossible to even know where it once was, all overgrown. Thorns every which way, from feet to head.Turning around was our only option, going down on rear ends as there are no holds on the rock face.
