The Helpoort Gate is part of the first city wall in the Netherlands, built in 1229 with special permission from Duke Henry I of Brabant. It is a remarkable structure, as it remains the only surviving and oldest city gate in the Netherlands. For approximately two centuries, it served as a defensive fortification to protect the city from external threats.
