The Old Jewish Cemetery
The development of Munich's Jewish community can also be traced through the history of its cemeteries. The gravestones in the old Jewish cemetery at Thalkirchner Straße 240, for example, bear witness to the community's rise in the nineteenth century and its decline during the Nazi era.
Place of "Eternal Life"
Opportunities to view the gravestones, however, are rare. The Place of "Eternal Life," opened in 1816, shortly after the founding of the Jewish Community, was closed in 1908. At that time, the new Jewish cemetery on Garchinger Straße began operations.
