The Charter of the Ban of Kulin is the most important monument of the cultural past of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the oldest preserved diplomatic document of the medieval Bosnian state, so it is customary to say that it is the birth certificate of Bosnian statehood.

It was written bilingually and in two scripts. In the original version, it is the Bosnian language and the Bosnian script (Bosančica), in the second version the same text is written in Latin and in Latin.

It was issued on August 29, 1189, by the then ruler of Bosnia, Ban Kulin, in Dubrovnik, which was the most important trading partner of medieval Bosnia.

The significance of the Charter of Kulin from a purely scientific point of view for the history of Bosnia is multiple. First, it is the oldest secular monument in the South Slavic region written in the Bosnian variant of the Cyrillic script – Bosančica. Second, it is the oldest legal act in the South Slavic region written in the vernacular (Slavic) language, in the variant of the Bosnian language.
