The Mecklenburg writer Fritz Reuter was one of the most prominent representatives of Low German literature. He moved to Eisenach in 1863 and had this villa built based on a Roman model as his retirement home, which he lived in until his death in 1874. After the death of his wife Luise, the villa became the property of the Schiller Foundation. A year later, the city of Eisenach bought it and set up a museum for the Low German poet. Today, the Eisenach Reuter House is the most important Reuter museum alongside the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum in the house where he was born in Stavenhagen. On the main floor of the building, the rooms with original furniture from Reuter's time can be viewed. The museum owns manuscripts, pictures and Reuter's library. In the salon, which has also been preserved, events of all kinds are now regularly held - concerts, readings, lectures and more. On the way to the Wartburg, the daily stream of visitors to the castle passes the striking building.

Fritz Reuter (1810–1874), who had moved from Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg to Eisenach in 1863 and was one of the highest-earning literary figures of his time, had the villa built in the neo-Renaissance style between 1866 and 1868 and lived there until his death. The plans for the villa were drawn up by the then very renowned architect Ludwig Bohnstedt. Reuter had the villa garden designed according to the plans of his friend and corps brother from his student days, the royal Prussian court garden director Ferdinand Jühlke. At Reuter's request, Jühlke drew up a garden plan in 1867 with a list of the types of fruit and vegetables to be planted. The garden, which clings to the steep slope, used to consist of a kitchen and fruit garden (which no longer exists today) as well as a living and ornamental garden, which surrounds the villa on three sides. Looking after this garden was Reuter's favorite pastime, and he left the decoration of the house to his wife.

After the death of Reuter's widow Luise in 1894, the house was initially given to the German Schiller Foundation in Weimar according to her will, then after a year it was purchased by the city of Eisenach and converted into a museum for the poet.

Today, the Reuter House in Eisenach is the most important Reuter museum, alongside the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum in the house where he was born in Stavenhagen. On the main floor, the rooms with original furniture can be viewed, including the salon, where cultural events such as concerts, readings or lectures as well as registry office weddings are regularly held.
