The Malpais de Güímar Nature Reserve circular hiking trail offers a unique volcanic landscape stretching from the Montaña Grande to the coastal area. Thanks to the mild climate in this area, many endemic species have been able to develop there.
The best way to explore this nature reserve is to take in the hiking trails with viewpoints, where you can admire the solidified lava flows, approximately 10,000 years old, the Canary Island spurge plants, and other spurge species that dominate the landscape. Of course, you might also encounter the ubiquitous Canary Island lizard here. The wind is omnipresent (make sure you hold on to your cap or hat securely), and there is no shade.
If you start in Puertito de Güímar, you can take a break about halfway along the trail at the kiosk in the village square of El Socorro (drinks and local food). A visit to the village church (Ermita del Socorro) is definitely worthwhile.
So, hikers, wear sturdy (hiking) shoes! Because you'll be walking on either lava scree or black sand, making for a wonderful exploration and enjoying the wonderful nature.
