Edmund Hellmer emerged as the winner of a competition announced in 1890 (in which Carl Kundmann and Viktor Tilgner also took part). The model of the monument to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was completed in 1895 and unveiled on December 15, 1900.
The poet is depicted sitting in a magnificent chair, which stands (on a three-tiered pedestal) on a base that curves outwards at the front. The Goethe Monument was built at the expense of the Vienna Goethe Society.
