The Vienna Naschmarkt: "Belly of Vienna"
"Maschanzker, Grumpern, Kartoffel, Paradeiser, Karfiol, Krauthappl, ..." The Naschmarkt is the most famous, largest and oldest of the Viennese markets. With its historic stalls, it is a world of its own, a mixture of Viennese originals and multicultural Vienna, as well as a playground for city strollers and connoisseurs. The Naschmarkt is also a piece of Viennese history, closely linked to Vienna's historical and current role as a Central European metropolis and melting pot of nations. Long declared dead, it has experienced a wonderful renaissance in recent years, and with it its surroundings. Life in the Heumühlviertel was originally characterized by modest mills and factories along a tributary of the Vienna River, today it is one of the trendiest residential areas in the Naschmarkt area.
