Visselhövede and also the inn for Visselquelle were from the beginning close to the source of the Vissel. The name of the water body is derived from a Germanic word fisela (= the slowly flowing). This name is certainly older than medieval. Although the place was first mentioned in writing in 1148, it already had a church at that time.

The oldest city plan from the year 1704 shows us the city with the ditch, which only enclosed a street with 33 plots. The church is located outside the wall at the Visselquelle. This topographical situation indicates that the settlement already existed when the church was built. Strangely enough, they were not built in the middle of the village, but at the source of the river. Presumably, there was a pre-Christian sanctuary here at the spring, for there are many examples of pre-historic and early-historical worship of sources.

In the Carolingian period, the first churches were often built directly on previously pagan cult sites. Thus, the old beliefs could be easily redirected to Christianity.

The Visselquelle, located next to the St. Johannis Church, has caused great concern to the Visselhövedern in the recent past, as it became more and more algae and muddy. In spring 2020, another attempt was made to master the plague. A completely redesigned area around the source was created. Reeds and grasses were planted on the flat spots to improve the water quality. Artificial hills have been created and the banks are designed with boulders from the heather. It is now possible to get directly to the water.
