Mountain lorises belong to the extremely colorfully feathered group of rainbow lorises. Because the birds cover all the colors of the rainbow in their plumage and are so colorful and busy, always cheerful-looking birds, they are also called rainbow lorikeets.

Lories belong to the parrot family and, like all representatives, have a very strong beak. However, all lories are characterized by a special feature in their diet: they drink liquid flower nectar!

For this they have a long, narrow and highly specialized tongue, the tip of which is densely covered with papillae. When a lorikeet visits a flower, the papillae soak up the nectar and pollen like a sponge. Back in the beak, the nectar is squeezed out of the tongue on skin folds in the palate. This process is repeated at high speed and the nectar is taken from the flowers with the tongue.

In this wonderful house in the bird park you can buy nectar for these birds. This means that the colourful fliers in Toowoomba can fly onto your hand and drink the nectar from the cup in close proximity.
