What is the historical significance of the Old Town Hall of Filsen?

The Old Town Hall, known as "Die Wachport," is a historically significant half-timbered building from 1611, built over an archway that is likely much older. It served multiple crucial roles: as a watch gate to close off the village at night, a village school until 1881, the town hall meeting room, and a municipal archive. Its inscription above the archway, "Die Wachport werd ich genannt, Als Hochschul bin ich dorfbekannt, Da blies der Wächter nachts die Stund, Auch gab er Feuer und Wasser kund," highlights its past functions as a watch tower, school, and community hub for announcing time, fire, and water.

Are there any specific hiking trails or routes that start or pass by the Old Town Hall of Filsen?

While the Old Town Hall itself is a historical landmark, it serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the scenic Middle Rhine region. Many hiking and cycling routes wind through Filsen and the surrounding landscape. The archway of the Old Town Hall was historically part of a transport route over the Rheinhöhe, which Romans also used. You can find various trails suitable for different difficulty levels, from leisurely strolls along the Rhine to more challenging treks in the hills, often accessible directly from the village.

What is the typical terrain and elevation like for hiking around Filsen?

Filsen is situated in the picturesque Middle Rhine region, known for its dramatic river valleys and vineyard-covered slopes. The Old Town Hall itself is at an elevation of approximately 154 meters. Hiking trails in the area can range from relatively flat paths along the Rhine riverbanks to steeper ascents into the surrounding hills, offering varied terrain including paved village roads, forest paths, and vineyard tracks. Hikers should be prepared for some elevation changes if venturing away from the immediate riverside.

Adjacent to the Old Town Hall, you can find the former community bakehouse, which adds to the historical context. In the fork of the road directly in front of the archway stands the "St. Margaretha" shrine, mentioned as early as 1712.
