The Thonet fountain on the market square commemorates the successful furniture designer Michael Thonet, who was born on July 2, 1796 in Boppard and died on March 3, 1871 in Vienna. Thonet invented the Viennese café chair with a backrest made from a single piece. "Chair No. 14" is considered one of the most successful industrial products of the 19th century.
