The botanical garden was opened in 1884 and is located north of the city center in close proximity to the Kiel Fjord, the art gallery and the university clinics. Thanks to the initiative of the Association for the Preservation and Promotion of the Old Botanical Garden, the garden still exists today and in its entirety is a natural and cultural monument.

The approximately 2.5 hectare hilly area is characterized by a partially very old wooded stock of unique beauty, characterized by exotic plants such as the coastal sequoia and one of the oldest and tallest primeval sequoia trees on the European mainland, an important ginkgo tree, a rare Amur cork tree , a sizeable Chinese sura tree and a group of bald cypress trees over 20 meters high.

Winding paths lead the visitor to various small biotopes, past slopes with a multitude of shrubs, perennials, bulbs and tubers with, especially in spring, extraordinary flowers. Since the association was founded, more than a hundred interesting and beautiful trees have been planted. These include magnolias, Japanese ornamental cherries, viburnum and rhododendrons, Japanese crescent fir, Japanese umbrella fir and Chinese spit fir.

A viewing pavilion with a wrought iron crown was built on the highest point of the garden in 1891. The octagonal brick building offers a beautiful view over the garden and also over the Kiel Fjord from its viewing platform.

Old trees and rhododendron bushes that bloom in different colors in spring. Also a nice view of the Kiel Fjord.

Instead of walking along the street, I recommend walking through the beautiful, very well-kept Old Botanical Garden - always a feast for the eyes 🌺 😊...

There are three buildings in the Old Botanical Garden: the pavilion above, with free access and a view of the fjord, and the two half-timbered houses: the small witch's house and the Selma Lagerlöff House, the former canteen.

The old botanical garden has existed since 1884 and is still well worth a visit. The garden is on a steep slope. The lower parts with the pond and half-timbered house are particularly worth seeing. In the upper layers there are mainly different, foreign trees. You don't have to plan a lot of visiting time here, but the paths through the area are very nice and the visit is free.

Even though I only walked a short distance through Kile, the Old Botanical Garden 🪴 should be one of your destinations. The free entry and the partially hidden seating areas invite you to linger, especially in summer. The grounds are very well maintained 👍🏼
