The opening of the ferry and cruise terminal at the Schwedenkai marks the beginning of a new era in Kiel's city harbor. In addition to the terminal opening, in 2010 and 2011 Stena Line replaced the ships previously used on the Kiel - Gothenburg route with much larger ships, the Stena Germanica III and the Stena Scandinavica IV, which are among the longest ferries in the world. The previous annual handling of 40,000 cargo units can thus be more than doubled. A good 30 million euros were invested at the Schwedenkai, of which around 18 million euros in the terminal building and 12 million euros in the optimization of terminal logistics and infrastructure.
