The museum was built in 1911 as a purpose-built museum for the collections of the museum association founded in 1880 by the soap manufacturer Julius Caesar Kähler and opened on February 9, 1913 as a local history museum. In 1992 it was enlarged by an extension and conceptually modernized. Since July 1, 2015, the Buxtehude Museum has been structurally renovated, expanded and has a new main entrance. New departments are created and the exhibitions are completely revised in terms of content and design. The museum will reopen in summer 2021. The "Altes Heimatmuseum" department will remain closed for the time being, as this part of the building will also be renovated in the coming years.
