"In memory of those who in 1939 and 1940 devoted their best efforts to the reclamation of this polder. And who lost their lives in a fatal accident." Fourteen names are also included. Thirteen of them died on October 16, 1940, when their bus collided with a train in thick fog near Ranum. They were unemployed people from Groningen, who had been deployed to the reclamation project as part of the work relief program.
