Lavin, Lower Engadine GR
Lavin (1,412 m above sea level) lies on a gravel terrace about 40 m above the left bank of the Inn River at the mouth of the Val Lavinuoz, which is drained by the Lavinuoz, at the southeastern foot of Piz Linard (3,411 m).
The village of 213 inhabitants impresses with its rich cultural offerings and extremely innovative residents. Its reconstruction after the great fire of 1869 has given the Engadin village Italian characteristics – also in the form of joie de vivre and cosmopolitanism. This is Lavin: Italianità Engiadinaisa.
We disembark the train and walk towards the cheese dairy and bakery to the spacious village square. Striking mountains and dancing swallows in the deep blue sky are reflected in the windows of the palazzo-like houses, and we think of a piazza in old Milan. A mountain biker rings the bell and waves us to the hotel terrace. Tired and excited after a long day on the "Lais da Macun" National Park hike, we join a convivial group of artisans, farmers, guests, and hosts.

Despite its population of only 200, Lavin boasts beautiful buildings and three shops (the VOLG grocery store with everyday goods, focusing on fresh produce; the Brunner Bike Stop with a repair service, two to three rental bikes, and a limited selection of spare parts, accessories, and equipment; and the Furnaria Giacometti bakery and café with a panoramic terrace, offering many artisanal baked goods and delicious pastries such as Bündner Nusstorte (Grisons Nut Cake) and pear bread, made according to an old family recipe). The Engadin village of Lavin was given Italian characteristics through its reconstruction after the great fire of 1869 – also in the form of joie de vivre and cosmopolitanism.
