The 22-meter-high Monument of National Unity (Monumentul Unirii) stands in Unirii Park, the site where over 100,000 Romanians from across Transylvania gathered in 1918 to decide on the union of Transylvania with Romania. Completed in 2018, the monument pays homage to those who achieved the Great Union, a law passed in Alba Iulia on December 1, 1918. The monument is made of limestone from Vratsa, Bulgaria, and consists of four equal-sized crosses, symbolically culminating in a dome. All elements of the work, 53 stone blocks weighing a total of 1,350 tons, were brought to Alba Iulia prefabricated and assembled like giant Lego bricks. The monument was designed by the sculptor Mihai Buculei. By day, the monument shines in white; at night, it is colorfully illuminated.
