    Hiking

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceio Velha was founded in 1534 as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Misericirdia and was then the second largest church in Lisbon after the Jernimos Convent. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed the old church, but not its façade, which, along with the Jernimos Convent and the Belém Tower, is one of the most beautiful Manueline buildings to survive the great earthquake.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha is particularly striking for its richly decorated Manueline facade, which rises among the houses of the Baixa district. Around the portal, you'll find countless sculptures, ornaments, and details that recall the great age of Portuguese seafaring. A short stop is worthwhile just to admire this stonework more closely.

What makes the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha a good destination for a family-friendly walk?

What is the historical significance of the Manueline facade that survived the 1755 earthquake?
