Alfama is located on one of the seven hills of Lisbon, between Castelo de Sāo Jorge en the Tagus. Alfama is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon. At the time of the Moorish rule, Lisbon consisted entirely of Alfama.
The area has a romantic, picturesque appearance and a maze of steep curves and corners, alleys and narrow bridges that lead through the winding streets and stairs. There are also many small bars here where you can listen to traditional Fado music in the evening.

The steep streets of Alfama, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon, are lined with traditional handicraft shops and cafes. The historic 28E tram winds its way across Alfama up to the 11th-century Castle of São Jorge. From the terrace of the Viewpoint Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen there is a wonderful view over the city and the river Tajo. In the evenings, melancholy fado music wafts out of some of the established local restaurants.

The Alfama neighborhood in Lisbon is a place full of charm and tradition. Alfama lies on the slopes of St. George's Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) and has grown as it pleased for centuries. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-Hamma, which means "baths" or "fountains." This former fishing neighborhood is the soul of Lisbon life and one of the best places to listen to fado in Lisbon.
