Previously there was a large cathedral on the site of the Nieuwe Kerk. The cathedral burned down in 1832. In July 1835 - two and a half years after the fire - work began on a new church (hence the name 'Nieuwe Kerk'). Because the architect who undertook the work went bankrupt, construction was halted for a long time. The Nieuwe Kerk was inaugurated in 1848.

At the end of World War II the church was badly damaged. A repair followed, but a general restoration remained unavoidable. Because of the high financial burden, the Reformed Congregation could not have the work carried out. The building closed in 1971. The Nieuwe Kerk deteriorated rapidly after windows were smashed and wind and rain were let loose.
A solution came in 1977. The building was given to the Stichting Oude Zeeuwse Kerken (Foundation of Old Zeeland Churches). The building was - with financial support - restored in phases in the years 1978-1988. As a fine example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture, the Nieuwe Kerk is a special object in the monumental town of Zierikzee.

For those who may wonder what they are looking at now?
In the pavement around the Nieuwe Kerk you can find the contours of the burnt down Grote Kerk.
      Historical indication:
The former Sint Lievensmonsterkerk in Zierikzee was the largest church in Zeeland and was one of the major city churches in our country. That of Zierikzee also fit in the row of the Sint Jan in Den Bosch, the Bavokerk in Haarlem and the Janskerk in Gouda. This jewel and the absolute pinnacle of Zierikzee monuments was severely damaged by fire in 1832. Then it was decided to demolish. Since 1848, the Nieuwe Kerk has stood on its site, which is only about a third of its predecessor's size. Those who want to get an impression of the former church can feast their eyes on the church square because the contours of the Grote Kerk, as it was later called, have been incorporated into the street surface. The tower was spared during the fire in 1832 and it is now the pride of Zierikzee.

The church building, completed in 1848, was named:
New Church and resembles a Roman temple

The Grote Kerk used to be on the same place, but it was unfortunately destroyed by a big fire in 1832.

In July 1835, two and a half years after the fire, work began on a new church. Because the architect, who had taken on the work, went bankrupt, construction was halted for a long time. The New Church was inaugurated in 1848. At the end of World War II, the church was damaged. Recovery followed, but complete restoration was inevitable.

The Reformed congregation, owner of the church, could no longer maintain the Nieuwe Kerk due to the heavy financial burden. The building was closed in 1971. The Nieuwe Kerk deteriorated visibly after windows were smashed and wind and rain were given free rein. A solution came in 1977.

The building was transferred to the Old Zeeland Churches Foundation. He had the building restored in phases, with financial support, in the years 1978-1988. As a fine example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture, the Nieuwe Kerk is a special object in a monumental city such as Zierikzee. On April 16, 1988, the building was festively inaugurated.

Today, the Nieuwe Kerk is no longer a house of prayer, but serves as a Cultural Temple where many concerts are organized.
