Zierikzee has largely preserved its medieval fortified form. In the 14th century, the town was surrounded by a moat and a wall. This wall was reinforced with about twenty, mostly semicircular, towers. Six gates provided access to the fortress. These include the Zuidhavenpoort (South Harbor Gate), which was intended to protect the southern harbor entrance.
