Mikó Castle, with its regular geometric floor plan and Italianate bastions, was built in the late Renaissance style and is the oldest and most important historical monument in the town of Miercurea-Ciuc. It bears the name of its builder, Francisc Mikó (1585–1635). Construction of the castle began in the spring of 1623, ten years after the owner became the chief captain of the Szekler estates of Ciuc, Gheorgheni, and Casin. Today, the building houses the Szekler Museum.
