The three-figure sculptural group is the second public statue of Bishop Áron Márton in Csikszereda (the first stands in front of the high school named after him). This monument, created by András Dóczi and located in Piața Libertății, was inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday 2016. It depicts the bishop, Archbishop of the Diocese of Alba Iulia from 1949, together with two other figures: a girl in Székely clothing and her foster mother standing behind her. Thus, the statue not only commemorates the bishop but also refers to those dark communist times when many Székely people were imprisoned for political reasons. Bishop Áron Márton, born in 1896, was also imprisoned by the Romanian communist regime from 1949 to 1955. In 1999, he was named “Righteous Among the Nations” by Israel for his efforts to save Transylvanian Jews from extermination.
