The Protestant parish church of St. Michael appears today as a baroque church. In 1396, when the early Gothic predecessor church built around 1280 fell victim to a fire in 1396 and had to be demolished, a three-aisled Gothic church was built until 1448, the aisles of which were built in the old cemetery. After the city fires in 1536 and 1540, the church was vaulted again in 1561 and probably Baroque in recatholic 1627. Between 1653 and 1900, the Michaelskirche was used by both denominations simultaneously. The tower was rebuilt in 1761 after the collapse of 1759. The pulpit was created in 1787 and carries the Archangel Michael on the sound cover. The church chairs are decorated with rich rococo carvings. A number of notable tombstones are reminiscent of important willows. The altarpiece Christi Geburt is a work of the Sulzbach court painter Johann Karl. Max Reger's large organ works were premiered at the Michaelskirche at the turn of the century. In 2000, the parish decided to replace the Walcker organ from 1967 (41 registers) by a new building. The new German-romantic organ with 53 registers, built by the company Weimbs in Hellenthal, was handed over on 4 March 2007 in the context of a festive divine service of its provision. A few meters away is a medieval light house from the former cemetery.

The originally Gothic church was first mentioned in 1341, when King John of Bohemia granted the right to occupy the church to the Waldsassen Monastery. Its history probably dates back to the 12th century. The first Protestant pastor is documented in 1535. In 1627, the church was taken over by the Jesuits during the re-Catholicization process, and from 1633 to 1899, it was used simultaneously by both denominations. Max Reger served as organist at this church from 1883 to 1889.

The Protestant parish church of St. Michael in the heart of Weiden's old town has a varied history. The originally simple hall church was extensively remodeled by 1448 into a Gothic church in the middle of the town cemetery. The building was badly damaged by the two town fires in 1536 and 1540, so that it had to be re-vaulted in 1561. After it collapsed in 1759, the tower was rebuilt two years later. Today, the Protestant parish church of St. Michael appears in all its glory as a magnificent baroque church that should not be overlooked on a sightseeing tour through the historic old town.
