The town hall is a group building consisting of three houses, which dates back to the 13th century. It is the oldest surviving secular building in the city. The Rostock town hall is one of the most important secular buildings of brick Gothic in the Baltic Sea region, on a par with the town halls in Lübeck and Stralsund. The medieval building is today largely covered due to baroque extensions and conversions.

In 1262 three sub-towns (old, middle and new town) were united. There was a need for a common city administration. The councilors therefore decided to build a handsome building and use it for various purposes. The building should be on the east side of the Neuer Markt.
The town hall is the oldest preserved secular building in the city. It was built in brick in the 13th century, recognizable by the pointed arched gable with the often mentioned seven towers. Over the centuries, however, the town hall has undergone many changes and the original brick building has been largely overlaid by baroque structures and conversions.
The architecture of the building is characterized by two styles - Gothic and Baroque.
