Hiking
There is no trace left of a retting pit (water used to ret flax). After the First World War, the first concrete retting pits appeared, and in 1943, retting in the Leie was banned. From then on, retting mills were built everywhere.
The Leie region's flax-producing past still resonates in the names of several Latem hiking trails (Rootput, De Roterij, Vlasdijkje, etc.). The chimney of the former Baeten flax factory also serves as a reminder of this.
