Afsnee is a picturesque village on the banks of the Leie River. Hard to believe: Afsnee is part of Ghent, but not a trace of a big city. The oldest documented mention of the place dates back to the year 697, when the Abbey of St. Peter in Ghent opened a branch here under the name "Afsnis". The name probably refers to the shortening ("afsnijde") of the old Leie curve, the mouth of which is north of the church.

Since then, water has determined life and so the village center is located directly on the river, as are other settlements. You will still find an original, open cultural landscape and some older farms here.

The village of Afsnee is very idyllically situated along the Leie, between Sint-Martens-Latem and the centre of Ghent, more specifically to the southwest of the city. Characteristic is the location of the village centre right on the Leie, as well as the other settlements along the Leie. The open cultural landscape as well as a few older farms have been preserved, as have various meadows such as the Beelaertmeersen and the Assels, which form part of the Leie landscape. Close to the late Romanesque St. John the Baptist church there is a manually operated bicycle and pedestrian ferry across the Leie, which connects the village centre of Afsnee with the Assels, a district of Afsnee on the left bank of the Leie. Although Afsnee is a sub-municipality of Ghent, it is mainly connected to the Leie region in terms of landscape and culture.
