Best Hikes to Landscape Steps Scharnhauser Park

Tips

  • The landscape staircase is an essential component of the urban design for Scharnhauser Park. At 1,050 meters long and 40 meters wide, it forms an imposing undeveloped break in a dense urban development, offering unobstructed views toward the Swabian Alb. Its 48 tiered sections adapt to the southern slope of the site. The landscape staircase is not only an urban design element, but also part of the district's drainage system. Rainwater from the gutters collects in the 48 sections after heavy rainfall. The water is not discharged into the sewer system and therefore does not burden the wastewater treatment plant. The rainwater, which is collected in the district's specially prepared trough and infiltration system with a total storage capacity of 14,000 cubic meters, then flows into the surrounding streams at a rate of 3 liters per second. This means that even after heavy rain, the streams do not receive more water than would be the case if Scharnhauser Park were completely undeveloped.
