A Roman sanctuary was located here as early as 150 AD.
"Sankt Walterich" was buried in the later church. There were whaling trips to his grave, which was a thorn in the side of the church and had the grave removed in 1801.

A church with a long history. The man who gave the church its name was a monk and is known to be the co-founder and first abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Murrhardt - he was not a saint, but was nevertheless revered as such by believers in the region because of his commitment.
His grave was in the current church.
