Berthold Schwarz (also Bertold Schwarz, Berthold the Black or Bertholdus Niger) was supposedly a Franciscan monk and alchemist in the 14th century from Freiburg im Breisgau. He is said to have discovered black powder by chance around 1359 (according to other sources 1353 or even earlier).
The person is now considered a fictional figure by historians and the invention of black powder and handguns or cannons attributed to him is considered a legend.
