It is believed that the cross-shaped boundary stone gave the pass between the Wolf and Harmersbach valleys its name "Kreuzsattel." On the western side, one can see Saint Gallus with the bear, the patron saint of the Harmersbach valley. According to legend, the Irish-Scottish monk also visited the Harmersbach valley on his missionary journey. However, there is no historical confirmation of this assumption. The letters HH on the stone can be interpreted as "Herrschaft Harmersbach."
On the Wolf valley side, one can see the coat of arms of the former lords of the Wolf valley, the Fürstenbergers. The carved dates between 1560 and 1778 commemorate official border inspections. The symbol N43 identifies the stone as the forty-third in the series of Harmersbach boundary stones. With the incorporation of the entire area into the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806, the stone's significance declined from a lordly landmark to an ordinary municipal boundary marker, which the people of Oberwolfach then assigned the number "141."
