The Rhäden is a lowland area of more than 200 hectares in a depression created by salt relocation and tectonic processes.
Once one of the largest swamp landscapes in the Hessian-Thuringian border region, today - after draining from 1859 by the communities of Obersuhl, Bosserode and Dankmarshausen after many years of grassland and arable use and later large-scale use - thanks to recultivation measures it is again a floodplain landscape of national importance as a breeding , feeding and resting area for rare and endangered bird species.
As early as 1973 and 1985, the Hessian parts of the Rhäden (120.4 ha) were designated as a nature reserve. In 1995 the Dankmarshäuser Rhäden (121.7 ha) was designated as a nature reserve.
