The Calvary group consists of a wooden cross with Christ on a small stone niche, flanked by two chapels with statues of Mary (left) and John (right). According to the inscriptions, the chapels date from 1739 and consist of a hard stone plinth with a superstructure. The images are a copy from 1973.

    Legend

Legend has it that the chapels were placed here by order of the lord of Schaloen Castle. He wanted to cross the Geul with his horse, but was prevented from doing so by an evil spirit: the Wild Hunter. The lord asked advice from the hermit of the Schaelsberg who advised him to erect statues in honor of Jesus, Mary and John in the woods on the other side of the Geul. The gentleman had the statues made and, after they were placed, was able to cross the Geul unimpeded in the future.

The Three Figurines. Opposite the bridge over the Geul are four statues known as The Three Statues. The group originated as a so-called Calvary group: Jesus on the cross, flanked by Mary and John.

A statue of Saint Rochus was later added to the pedestal of Jesus. Behind it are three lime trees and an old marl quarry is visible. The niches of Mary and John are the oldest parts of the sculpture group and were built in 1739.

The crucifix was replaced around 1900. It is provided with a neo-Gothic pedestal, containing the fourth figurine. The statues of Johannes and Maria are not original: they are copies from 1973 of earlier, unfortunately stolen, statues.

        Evil Spirit:

According to a legend, the horses of the lord of the castle of Schaloen did not want to cross the bridge over the Geul. The cause was the evil spirit Ruprecht. The Three Statues were then founded on the advice of the hermit on the Schaelsberg. Since then, people and animals cross here safely.

        Year built: 1739

        Status: National monument
