Historical explanation: The Burchtse Weel is a typical example of a tidal gap that arose behind the dike after a dike breach. On the Ferraris map (1776), where the weel is called "Grooten Weel", it is visible where the dike breach occurred. After the Schelde dike was repaired, the body of water was largely preserved.
