First documented in 1352 as the "New Mill," the Niedermühle (Lower Mill) is one of the oldest buildings in Steinfurt. At that time, it was an important cornerstone of the medieval city fortifications. Although the mill was reduced to rubble by a fire on July 16, 1697, milling operations resumed on September 29 of the same year. In 1819, the castle archives mention two waterwheels and two milling gears; a third milling gear was added in 1864. This enabled rye, buckwheat, and barley to be milled. In 1909, the old dam and its waterwheels were swept away by a flood and replaced by a wider, undershot waterwheel with steel blades.
