Although the river cannot be seen here, it still characterizes these areas. And he can and should do that. The river and the surrounding area communicate with each other via the river level and the groundwater level, which means that the meadows are temporarily or permanently wet. Where possible, shallow water areas, so-called blänken, are created or water-bearing ditches are slightly dammed. Reeds and shrubs are allowed to grow and spread - ash trees, duckweed or real valerian feel particularly at home here. And animal species that specialize in such areas also settle with them. In a word: This area is now being farmed EXtensively.

In contrast to this is the INtensive use of land that we often find in agriculture. It can be used to achieve particularly high yields. This also includes the simplest possible soil cultivation, which is achieved, among other things, by drainage. Intensive land management goes hand in hand with low biodiversity. However, this biological poverty can also lead to economic problems: monocultures require long-term care and are susceptible to climate change or individual pests. We currently find a drastic example in many German low mountain ranges: in the spruce forests there, the bark beetle encounters hardly any enemies, but instead encounters millions of trees weakened by drought. Found food!

A diverse ecosystem with good site adaptation has significantly more to counteract such damaging influences.

    Landing nets allowed!

The Biological Station Unna & Dortmund expressly invites you to investigate life in the water with a net at this wet biotope. Dragonfly larvae and other water dwellers want to be carefully discovered and then released again.

Nature reserve NSG Lippeaue from Lünen to lock Horst

From Konrad-Adenauer-Straße in the east to the former Horst lock in the west, the nature reserve stretches in a large arc along the Lippe as a floodplain. The area of the Lippeauen appears as a large strip of grassland together with the glider airfield lying outside the protected area up to the old Buddenburg. A wide variety of bird species have long since conquered the area again as a habitat for wintering and breeding, which was not the case in the district for decades.

As part of the rethinking and the far-reaching renaturation, the Lippe meadows and measures such as restoring continuity by flooding weirs - for example in Lippolthausen - are part of a bundle of prerequisites that not only create habitats for birds, but also for many other animal species. This also includes the wet grassland fallow land in the alluvial forest at the constricted old arm of the onion field. In this way, nature regains habitat for plants and animals, and people receive high-quality recreational space.

Short section past the glider airfield of Lünen which is worth to drive if you are not in a hurry.
