The Preußenhafen, which was once a transshipment point for coal and steel, is still a transshipment point today; but for coffee, cake, beer and sausages. 😜

      The Preußenhafen
A rest stop on the water and a gateway to urban life

Located on the south bank of the Datteln-Hamm Canal, the Preußenhafen is well connected in terms of infrastructure for both the region and Lünen itself: It is a junction between Lünen-Süd, Gahmen and Horstmar - a 10-minute walk to the city center - and at the same time connects the Ruhr region with the Münsterland recreational landscape.

In its current, modern form, the former coal port symbolizes the successful connection between yesterday and today that can be used by the people of Lünen and by tourism. The Moor crane towering imposingly above the water bank is an impressive reminder of a time long gone. For 80 years, the Preußenhafen served the region well as a transshipment point for black gold from the mines, and in the mid-1960s it was expanded to its current size. Nevertheless, structural change did not stop at this port and its importance continuously decreased until all loading activities were stopped in 1995.

The first section of the Datteln-Hamm Canal was completed in 1914. In 1933 it reached its current length of approx. 47 km.
