It was the city of Delft, located 13 km inland, that built this harbor to gain its own access to the Nieuwe Maas and thus to the world's oceans via the Schie River.
In the 19th century, the harbor, surrounded by characteristic gabled houses, was incorporated into Rotterdam.
Already in insignificance at that time, it was spared during the German bombing of 1940.
Therefore, Delfshaven is today the only part of Rotterdam where a museum-like, typically Dutch cityscape with drawbridges, windmills, and ships can be found.
Cafés, restaurants, and pubs beckon along the banks.
