The nature reserve Grainberg-Kalbenstein-Saupurzel, which begins east of Karlstadt and reaches as far as Gambach, is characterized by different habitats and geological formations. In it you can find Muschelkalkbastionen, Buntsandsteinterrassen and vineyard walls as well as seams, hedges, sands, heat-loving forests, Ackerweut sites and various dry grasslands. The drylands are considered the most floristic and faunistic rich in Bavaria.
