A very nice church in the middle of the old town houses. Behind the red sandstone portal, a modern glass entrance provides a view of the splendid Rococo decorations. The Augustinian Church in the middle of the old town remained almost intact during World War II and shows an extraordinary display of splendor in its original state for the region. The mendicant order of the Augustinian Hermits, which had been based in Augustinerstrasse since 1260, had a convent until 1802. The hall church was rebuilt from 1768 to 1772 including the monastery. mainz.de/tourismus/sehenswerte/augustinerkirche.php

The Augustinerkirche in Mainz, also known as the Church of St. Augustin, is a magnificent Rococo church in the old town. It was built from 1768 to 1771 on the site of an older Gothic church dating from 1260. The church originally served the Augustinian Order, which was based in Mainz until 1802. Since 1805 it has been used as the seminary church of the Episcopal Seminary.

The impressive facade of the Augustinerkirche is made of red sandstone and shows lively baroque forms. A central group of figures above the portal represents the Coronation of Mary, flanked by Saints Augustine and Monica. These figures were created by the Mainz sculptor Nikolaus Binterim.

The interior of the church is richly decorated with Rococo decorations. The painter Johann Baptist Enderle created the large ceiling paintings depicting the life of Saint Augustine. A special highlight is the baroque organ by Johann Heinrich Stumm from 1773, which is one of the few original instruments from this renowned organ-building family that has been preserved.

A notable work of art in the church is a Gothic linden wood sculpture of Mary with the playing baby Jesus from 1420, which originally came from the Church of Our Lady and was brought to the Augustinian Church after its destruction.

The Augustinian Church remained almost intact during the Second World War and is therefore a valuable example of the region's undisturbed baroque splendor.
