At the beginning of the 19th century, the Mainz fortress was expanded. This also included the construction of the Reduit barracks on the strategically important bridge over the Rhine. In the immediate vicinity of the historic building, you can relax wonderfully today, stroll along the bank or stop in one of the restaurants such as Bastion Schönborn. Incidentally, the Mainz-Kastel district nowadays does not belong to Mainz, but to Wiesbaden, and thus to Hesse.
