Bergedorf Castle is the only remaining castle in the Hamburg city area. It is located in the Bergedorf district of Hamburg, right in the middle of the former town center on the Bille.

The origins of Bergedorf Castle have not yet been clearly clarified. A "fixed house" was first mentioned in documents in the 14th century. However, since 1208 Count Albrecht von Orlamünde dammed the Bille River and built a mill, it is possible that the first protective device was built at that time. A model that is exhibited in the castle shows what the castle might originally have looked like. Presumably it was a palisade-enclosed complex secured with a double moat and drawbridge. Inside, as in other German low-rise castles, there will have been a massive tower as a retreat for the attack, as well as a commercial and residential building with stables and wells. Since no systematic soil investigations have been carried out so far, this remains speculation.

Until 1420, the system served as a residence for the dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg. Thereafter, the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Hamburg brought Bergedorf (including the four-country villages of Altengamme, Curslack, Kirchwerder and Neuengamme and Geesthacht) under their rule, and the castle became the seat of a two-city administration.

The castle houses the Museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande and is part of the Bergedorf museum landscape. There is a café on the ground floor of the north wing.

Quite small, but nice. And actually not a castle, but a castle. Even with a moat around it. It is home to the Museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande.

There is only one castle left in Hamburg's city area - in the heart of Bergedorf. After a long history, there is now a museum in the venerable building.
The Bergedorf Castle is a four-winged complex. It houses a museum and a café and can also be rented for weddings.
The castle was first mentioned in documents as a "fortified house" in the 14th century, but more precise information about it cannot be found in the sources. It may have been built as a protective structure on the Bille at the beginning of the 13th century. The appearance of the early castle is also not documented and is based solely on speculation. A model of what the castle might have originally looked like can be found inside the castle.
